Chapter 33 – A Defining Moment

Moments in life define us. This is a team. We plan, prepare and deliver as one. We win together. We learn together. All eyes bore into the unopened envelope. Emotions have created a thick atmosphere of anticipation.

The envelope is pristine. Gilt edged portraying its importance. I carefully cut through the wax seal and remove the letter. I take a deep breath and read it out.

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for Thompson & French’s highly detailed proposal. Following significant review and comparison we have not awarded the tendered contract to you alone.

My mouth stops working. My eyes look upwards. A bead of sweat perspires from my forehead.

Grace, our Office Secretary, asks “Does it say anything else?”. I compose myself and read on.

We have decided to divide the contract into two with the River Clyde acting as the partition line. Thompson & French is awarded the southern side of the river and we look forward to working with you.

Yours faithfully

Lord Dean of Guild, Glasgow

My mind races. Why have they split it? Cary & Fortis is given the greater share of the city? The sense of disbelief and shock is palpable.

I decide to close the office for the evening. No one is in the mood to go home. Scotia Bar it is. Our next move is so important.
